The 2019 renewal of the MSBM Conference on Business and Management is the third in a series that aims to frame scholars and practitioners as partners in the task of rigorously interrogating the theory and practice of business and management with a particular focus on the challenges faced by businesses in small island developing states. Aside from vigorous engagement between the university and the business community, the two previous conferences have resulted in one special edition of the regional journal Social and Economic Studies and ongoing work towards, among other things, a special edition of Entrepreneurship and Regional Development.
The MSBM Conference recognizes that over the years, business scholarship has been characterized by inadequate focus on the challenges of businesses located in small developing economies. The conference will respond to this gap by providing a forum for the sharing of ideas about the role of business and management practice, scholarship and education in the advancement of economies such as those in the Caribbean Region.
For the third conference the School has decided to focus broadly, on the role and impact of finance in enterprise development, especially in the context of small developing economies.
The Conference seeks to attract national, regional and international scholars who are writing and researching on a range of business related issues as well as the practitioners who are grappling with these issues on a daily basis.
2nd MSBM Conference on Business and Management
November 9, 2016 – November 11, 2016
Sustaining its mission to engage with the pressing and emerging themes in business and management Mona School of Business and Management, the University of the West Indies will be convening its second academic conference around the theme: Connecting the Dots: Enterprise, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainable Development. The theme of this second event is guided by the emphasis on the private sector in the SDG and by extension, the focus on business, enterprise and entrepreneurship.
Along with innovation, enterprise and entrepreneurship are major factors of production, receiving increased attention in the discourse on economic growth and development. The recognition of entrepreneurship as an important enabler in the development process has always been acknowledged by economic development scholars such as Sir Arthur Lewis, a Nobel Prize winner in Economics who was born in the Caribbean. Today, with the Caribbean struggling to find a strong growth pole on which to anchor its future development, it is acknowledged that entrepreneurship and innovation will be the key factors of production that it must harness within an SDG world. It is critical therefore, that rigorous academic attention be paid to these important pillars of future growth for the region in order to build a strong conceptual and empirical base from which to launch.
Inaugural Conference on Business and Management

This Conference marks the inauguration of a series that will frame scholars and practitioners as partners in the task of rigorously interrogating business and management theory and practice in the light of Caribbean reality. It fills a significant gap in business scholarship and practice by focusing specifically on issues relating to business and management theory and practice in the Caribbean region. The conference will provide a forum in which both scholars and practitioners can focus on these crucial issues and will focus on topics that are germane to the discipline of business and management, particularly new and emerging themes, interrogating these issues through the lens of small states development. Its aim is to attract national, regional and international scholars who are writing and researching on issues in the discipline and its sub-disciplines as well as the practitioners who are grappling with these issues on a daily basis.
