Business in the Clouds: Exploring Hosted Information Services

Cloud Computing offers benefits such as lower costs and improved business agility but organisations must excercise due diligence in indentifying services to be outsourced, seleting service providers, and evaluating and mitigating security risk.

Cloud Computing is undoubtedly an innovation which is rapidly redefining business strategies for productivity and efficiency in both private and public sector organisations. It has been touted as another paradigm shift and a major stride in the application of information and communications technologies (ICT) to the solution of business problems in organisations. It represents a novel but now well entrenched alternative means of access to information technology resources and services and, like many other technology-based remedies, offers a variety of benefits that are not risk free.

The term cloud computing is used to denote the delivery of hosted computing services over the Internet, with the goal of providing easy, convenient access to computing resources and services on demand for a subscription fee. It is  sometimes called utility computing because, like electricity and water, it is scalable; that is, one can acquire and pay for as much or as little as is desired on an as needed basis with minimal management effort and without the conspicuous intervention of the service provider.
